I honestly dont know why choosing a lens for this camera is so stressful but here I am losing my mind over focal lengths again. I just picked up a used X-Pro3 because I wanted that rangefinder feel for when I move to Chicago next month but now I am stuck. I spent hours reading forums and everyone says something different and its honestly driving me crazy. Some swear by the 23mm f2 because its small and weather resistant which sounds great since Chicago weather is a nightmare but then I see people saying the optics are soft wide open and that it lacks that certain pop or character compared to the older stuff.

Then there is the 35mm f1.4 which apparently is the holy grail of fuji lenses but its old and the autofocus sounds like a coffee grinder and I am worried itll hunt too much when I am trying to catch someone walking fast. Plus does it even work well with the OVF? I really want to use the optical viewfinder because that was the whole point of buying this body but I dont want half my frame blocked by a giant lens hood or a bulky barrel. Its so hard to tell from youtube videos how much it actually obstructs your view in real life usage.

Here is what I am dealing with:

  • Budget: trying to stay under 550 or 600 bucks tops and I am totally fine with used gear if it saves me money
  • Size: has to be small and discreet because I dont want to look like a tourist or a pro photographer when I am out
  • Use case: strictly street photography and candid shots in the city maybe some urban architecture
  • Weather sealing: would be a huge plus but I dont know if I am overvaluing it
  • Speed: need something that is snappy and doesnt struggle when the sun starts going down

I even looked at the 27mm pancake too but f2.8 feels a bit slow for what I want to do and I heard the manual focus ring is basically useless which sucks if I want to zone focus. I just want one lens to stay on this body forever so I can stop thinking about gear and just shoot. Is the 23mm f2 actually that soft or are people just being pixel peepers? Or should I just suck it up and get the 35mm and deal with the slow focus...

Look, Ive tried many lenses on my Fuji bodies over the years and honestly, if you are moving to Chicago, you need reliability. People online are total pixel peepers. In my experience, the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR is the only logical choice for your X-Pro3.

  • Weather sealing is a lifesaver when it starts snowing in the city.
  • It is designed for the OVF. The tapered shape means you barely see it in the corner.
  • The autofocus is way snappier than the old 35mm f1.4. The softness issue is basically only when you are shooting wide open at minimum focus distance. For street stuff? You wont even notice it. If you want more reach, check out the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR too. It is just as tough and fast. Stick to the f2 fujicrons, they are safer for daily use and wont fail you when the wind picks up...
