So I finally pulled the trigger on the X-S20 mainly for that internal stabilization since I do a lot of handheld video but now I'm stuck on glass. I’ve been shooting with an old Nikon setup for a decade so I know my way around a sensor but this Fuji system is all new to me.
I'm looking for a solid budget prime under like $300 for a street photography trip to NYC next month. My logic was maybe the XC 35mm f2 because it’s cheap and light but then I saw those Viltrox 27mm or 33mm ones and now I'm second guessing if the autofocus is gonna hold up for video. Is the XC actually sharp enough or should I just save up for the XF line? Its kinda driving me crazy trying to balance price vs performance...
You should check out these two options because they are both amazing for a budget setup!
- The Fujinon XC 35mm f2 is basically the same glass as the XF version but way cheaper and super sharp.
- The Viltrox 33mm f1.4 XF AF is fantastic for low light and the autofocus is actually really snappy for video! I love my XC for street stuff because its so light and portable!
Building on the earlier suggestion, budget optics often show higher chromatic aberration and lower MTF performance. I usually check focus motor step counts for video tracking. Honestly tho, NYC street trips are more about surviving the logistics.
- navigating subway maps
- finding decent pizza
- dodging tourists Last time I went, I spent the whole trip hunting for a specific vintage shop and didnt take any photos. Anyway lol.
Like someone mentioned, diving into those technical specs like motor counts is the only way to stay sane, but honestly its ridiculous how much the budget market has shifted lately! It drives me crazy that we are even talking about $300 as cheap when the build quality on some of these newer lenses feels so much flimsier than the old manual gear. Its such a scam how companies keep jacking up prices while cutting corners on stuff that actually matters for reliability, like solid mounts and decent weather sealing. Like, we just want glass that wont fail the moment a little NYC humidity or a subway breeze hits it!! It feels like the industry is just trying to squeeze every cent out of us while providing less and less actual longevity. Its so frustrating trying to build a reliable kit without feeling like you are getting ripped off by cheap internals... ugh, honestly the whole situation is just exhausting sometimes!
Adding my perspective after shooting Fuji for years. For NYC, you might want something more compact than a 35mm.
- TTArtisan 27mm f2.8 AF: Tiny pancake lens. Its great for stealthy street shots. Autofocus is decent for video tho slightly noisier than native glass.
- Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary: In my experience, Sigma has the best AF motors here. Super sharp and handles video tracking on the X-S20 like a champ.
