Just picked up an X-T5 and I am totally overwhelmed by the lens choices. My old camera broke right before a big trip to Japan next month so I really need something versatile that I can just leave on the body for 90 percent of the trip. I do a lot of street photography and the occasional landscape shot but I dont want to be swapping glass in the middle of a busy station.

Im currently torn between the 16-80mm f/4 and the 18-55mm kit lens. The 16-80 gives me that extra reach which sounds great for travel but Ive read mixed things about the sharpness at the long end. On the other hand the 18-55 is so much smaller and I could probably grab a used copy for cheap to save money for food in Tokyo. I also briefly considered the 16-55 f/2.8 but honestly it looks like a total brick and I dont think my wrists can handle carrying that around all day for two weeks straight.

Budget-wise I can spend around 700 to 800 bucks max since the body already drained my savings. Which one of these is actually going to give me the best image quality without making my camera bag impossible to lug around?

Honestly, grab the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS! It is perfect for Tokyo.

  • Super lightweight
  • Fast enough for street shots You will love the extra cash for sushi!

> I do a lot of street photography and the occasional landscape shot but I dont want to be swapping glass in the middle of a busy station. Totally get that. I took my Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR to Japan last year and honestly, it works well for travel. Being able to hit 16mm for those tight Tokyo alleyways and then zoom into 80mm for some compression on distant buildings is a lifesaver. Sure, the f/4 aperture isnt winning any awards for low light, but the OIS is pretty solid on the X-T5. I was satisfied with the sharpness, especially since I mostly shoot at f/8 for landscapes anyway. If you want one lens that covers almost everything without you having to carry a brick like the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR, this is a safe bet. Just watch your shutter speed at the long end and you'll be fine.

Had a moment to think about this more. Like someone mentioned, the 18-55mm is a solid bet for travel! I spent two weeks hiking with the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS and never felt weighed down. It is just so reliable.

  • Keep a spare Wasabi Power NP-W235 Battery in your bag.
  • Use a wrist strap for extra security in crowds. Enjoy the trip, Japan is absolutely stunning this time of year!

Honestly, go with the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS. It is compact, plenty sharp for travel, and saves you money for ramen. You'll be happy with the results.
