What is the best all-around lens for the Fujifilm X-T5 that I can just leave on the camera and never take off? I am honestly so confused and I feel like I am drowning in all these numbers and letters like f2.8 and 18-55mm and I just dont get what any of it means for a beginner like me. I just bought the camera body because everyone said it was the best for travel but now I realized it doesnt actually come with a lens and I have a huge trip to Japan coming up in exactly 18 days. I really need to get something ordered tonight so I can practice before I go but I dont want to carry a whole bag of glass with me while I am walking around Tokyo.
My budget is probably around 800 or 900 dollars maybe a thousand if it really makes a huge difference in how the photos look? I just want one lens that can do everything like street scenes and food photos and maybe some nice pictures of my partner without them looking blurry or weird. Is the kit lens people talk about enough or should I be looking at those chunky red badge ones? Sorry if this is a stupid question I just really dont want to mess this up and have no way to take photos on my flight...
Saw this earlier. Are you worried about rain? For safety, the Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is weather sealed and covers every scene. Its a safe, reliable choice for your budget.
To add to the point above: one thing to keep in mind is that the X-T5 uses a 40-megapixel sensor. From my experience, this means you need high-quality glass to actually see the benefits of that expensive camera body. If you buy a lens that isnt sharp enough, your photos might look a bit muddy when you zoom in. Since Japan can be quite rainy, I would prioritize "WR" (Weather Resistant) lenses to ensure the gear doesnt fail on you mid-trip.
- Constant Aperture: Lenses like an f/2.8 or f/4 wont change brightness while you zoom.
- Linear Motors (LM): These provide faster, quieter focusing for street shots. I found that the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f2.8 R LM WR is basically the most reliable pro option for this body. It is definitely on the heavier side tho, but it produces the cleanest images for food and portraits. If you want to stay within budget, the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f4 R OIS WR is a solid technical compromise that still offers weather sealing and great stabilization.
> What is the best all-around lens for the Fujifilm X-T5 that I can just leave on the camera and never take off? Honestly you should just grab the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X right now! It is seriously amazing for travel because its so tiny and light. Since you are going to Japan, you dont want a massive brick hanging off your neck while you're walking 20k steps a day. This lens is way better than the standard kit lens because of that f2.8 number... basically it lets in more light so your food photos and night shots in Shinjuku will look fantastic without being all blurry. It fits way under your budget too, so you can spend that extra cash on some cool souvenirs instead! Skip the chunky red badge stuff for now, they are total overkill for a beginner and honestly just too heavy to carry all day. This Sigma is the absolute sweet spot for value and quality. You're gonna love it!
Re: "> What is the best all-around lens for..."
- Love the Sigma suggestion, but I gotta add these two to your list!
- Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 R LM OIS: Super tiny and has fast autofocus for those quick street shots.
- Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f4 R OIS WR: My fav for travel. The OIS is actually insane for keeping photos sharp! Both fit your budget easily. Ngl that 16-80mm range is a total dream for Tokyo streets.
