I finally jumped to the X-T5 from my old X-T3 and that 40MP sensor is no joke. I'm finding that some of my older f2 'Fujicrons' just aren't quite hitting the sharpness I want when I crop in. Looking for that one goldilocks prime for a Tokyo trip in May so I can travel light and not swap lenses every five minutes.

  • budget is around 850ish
  • needs weather sealing (WR)
  • must handle the high res sensor
  • fast linear motor AF

I'm torn between the new 23mm f1.4 LM WR or maybe the 33mm but I worry the 33 might be too tight for narrow street stuff. What are you guys using as your daily driver on the T5...

The 40MP sensor on your X-T5 really demands the updated optics found in the newer LM WR lineup. Based on the resolution requirements and your budget, the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR is the most versatile pick for a Tokyo trip. It features the linear motor you need for fast tracking and the optical design resolves far better than the older f2 Fujicrons. While the Fujifilm XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR is technically a hair sharper in the center, the 23mm focal length is much better for tight alleys and street scenes. Quick tip: use the 1.4x digital teleconverter mode on the camera body. Since you have 40MP to play with, cropping the 23mm in-camera gives you a roughly 50mm equivalent field of view while still maintaining enough resolution for high-quality prints. It basically solves your worry about the 33mm being too tight for those narrow Shibuya walkways.
