I recently made the jump to the Fujifilm X-T5, and while I’m absolutely loving the 40MP resolution and the improved IBIS, I’m struggling to pick the right 'everyday' zoom lens to live on the camera. I’m planning a few trips later this year and really want a versatile setup that can handle everything from street photography to sweeping landscapes without me constantly swapping glass.
I currently have the old XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4, and while it's a classic, I'm worried it isn't quite sharp enough to keep up with that high-res sensor. I’ve been looking at the XF 16-80mm f/4 for its extra reach and constant aperture, but I’ve heard mixed things about its corner sharpness. Then there’s the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8, which sounds great for low light, but it seems a bit bulky for the X-T5’s relatively compact body.
I’m looking for something that balances image quality, weight, and focal range. Since the X-T5 is weather-sealed, having a WR lens would be a huge plus for peace of mind when I'm out hiking.
For those of you who have been shooting with the X-T5 for a while, which zoom lens do you find provides the best balance of performance and versatility for a 'one-lens' kit?
In my experience, i had issues with the expensive 'pro' zooms being way too heavy for travel. unfortunately, the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR just costs too much for what it is. i would suggest the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. it's not as good as expected in the corners, but for the price it's solid. the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is just way too bulky tho. good luck!
To add to the point above: I spent some time digging through the technical data for that 40MP sensor. It really punishes older optical designs. I actually went a different route and tested the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary because its light and basically matches the resolution of the newer Fuji glass. It isnt weather sealed tho, which I know is a bummer for hiking. If you really need that WR seal, check out the Fujifilm XF 18-120mm f/4 PZ WR. It was technically designed for video but the optics are modern and it handles the high res sensor better than the legacy 18-135. It is a bit long but the internal zoom mechanism is a tank for dusty trails since nothing moves externally. Tbh, its the only way to get a constant aperture with that much reach without carrying the brick-sized pro zooms. TL;DR:
- Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary: Best sharpness to weight ratio, lacks WR.
- Fujifilm XF 18-120mm f/4 PZ WR: Best weather sealing and focal range, slightly bulky.
Hey, i feel u on this. Honestly, that 40MP sensor is super picky about glass. I've tried many zooms on my X-T5, and for your situation, I would suggest the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR. I know, i know, it doesnt have OIS, but your Fujifilm X-T5 IBIS handles that basically perfectly. It is the only zoom that really lets that high-res sensor breathe in my experience. The Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR is okay for travel, but like you heard, the corners get kinda mushy. If youre hiking, the WR on the 16-55 is literal peace of mind. It’s a bit heavy, but the image quality is prime-level. I mean, if you want one lens to rule them all and actually use those 40 megapixels, thats the one. Plus, the 16mm wide end is way better for landscapes than the 18mm. gl!
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
TIL! Thanks for sharing
- That 40MP sensor really does demand a lot from whatever you put in front of it, especially if you want things to stay sharp for years.
- I always lean toward the most rugged options available because i dont like worrying about my gear when i am actually out in the field.
- This reminds me of a hiking trip I did in the Smokies where the humidity was so high my glasses wouldnt stop fogging up.
- Met a guy on the trail who was trying to dry out his socks over a tiny portable stove while it was actively pouring rain.
- We sat under a ledge for two hours talking about the best way to waterproof leather boots and he had some really specific opinions on mink oil.
- I think he might have been a cobbler or something in a past life because he knew way too much about stitching.
- Anyway lol, sorry I totally went off on a tangent there.
I was so nervous about getting the wrong lens when I first switched to the X-T5 because I didnt want to break the bank or get something that wasnt safe for hiking in the rain! I finally decided on the Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR and I am obsessed with it! It is the newer version of the kit lens and honestly, it is amazing for that 40MP sensor. I took it on a trip to the mountains last month and it poured on me, but the weather sealing kept everything totally dry and safe... such a relief! It is super lightweight too, so I didnt get that annoying neck ache from carrying a heavy setup all day. It is way more affordable than the pro zooms but still gives me those super sharp shots I was looking for. Definitely check it out if you want something reliable that wont weigh you down or cost a fortune!
