I need to know what you guys think is the absolute best prime for street work on the X-T5 specifically. Ive been shooting with the X-T series since the original one came out but this 40 megapixel sensor is a whole different ballgame and Im honestly a little overwhelmed by the options now. I just sold my old X-T3 and some old glass to fund the X-T5 and I am so stoked to get out there but Im hitting a wall with lens choice.

Basically Im heading to Tokyo in late October for about two weeks and I want to travel light so I promised myself I would only bring one prime lens. Just one. I used to swear by the old 23mm f1.4 R but its not weather sealed and the autofocus feels kinda sluggish compared to what this new body can do. Plus I keep hearing that the older lenses cant really keep up with the resolution of the X-T5 sensor so maybe I need the newer version? But then there is the 18mm f1.4 which is supposedly legendary for sharpness and that extra width might be killer for the narrow Shinjuku alleys at night.

The 33mm f1.4 looks amazing too but I worry it might be too tight for some of the street scenes I like to capture. I have about 950 bucks set aside for this and I really want something with a linear motor because the face detection on the T5 is insane and I dont want the lens to be the bottleneck. Is the 27mm f2.8 pancake even worth considering if I want the best image quality possible or is that just for the form factor? I keep going back and forth between the 23mm and the 18mm and my head is spinning.

Does anyone have real world experience with these specific combos on the high res sensor? I really want those crisp details when I crop in later but I also need that fast focus for those blink-and-you-miss-it moments. What would you take for a once in a lifetime trip like this?

Tokyo is gonna be absolute magic with that X-T5! Since youre dealing with 40 megapixels now, you definitely want the newer glass to see what that sensor can do. Honestly, you cant go wrong with any of the latest fast primes from Fuji, imo.

  • Look for the newer ones with linear motors
  • Make sure its weather sealed Just stick with the newest Fujifilm stuff and youll be totally golden!
