I just got my hands on the Fujifilm X-H2S and honestly Im so excited to start using it but I am totally overwhelmed. I saved up for like a year to get this because I heard it was amazing for fast stuff like sports and birds but now I realized I dont actually have a lens that zooms in at all!! I just have the little flat one it came with. Sorry if this is a total noob question but what should I actually buy if I want to see things far away? I’m going on a trip to San Diego in about three weeks and I really want to take photos of my kids playing soccer and maybe some seals at the beach but I have no idea what the numbers on the lenses even mean.
Here is what I am looking for:
- budget is around 900 dollars maybe a bit more if its really worth it
- needs to be good for sports but also just walking around
- not too heavy because I’m gonna be carrying it all day at the zoo
- easy to use for someone who doesnt know what f-stop means yet lol
Is there like one lens that does everything or do I need to buy a bunch of them? I saw one that said 18-120 and another that said 70-300 and I am just so confused about which one would be better for a beginner like me...
Welcome to the club! Honestly, its a bit of a shame to have that powerful X-H2S body and no reach yet. I was really disappointed when I tried using the Fujifilm XF 18-120mm f/4 LM PZ WR for wildlife... unfortunately it just doesnt get close enough and the power zoom feels clunky for stills. For your budget and those soccer games, you really only have one best choice. Go with the Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR. Ive used it for years and its the perfect balance for travel.
- The 300mm number means it zooms in way further than the 120mm
- It is surprisingly light for how much zoom you get
- It fits right in your budget Just a quick tip: since youre new to settings, put the top dial on S and set the speed to 1000 for the soccer stuff so the kids arent blurry. The seals will be easy, but fast sports is a whole different ball game lol.
