Are Sigma Art lenses better than Panasonic S Pro lenses for L-mount?

So I just picked up a Lumix S5II because I finally decided to move away from my old DSLR setup and man the autofocus is a game changer but now I am stuck in this massive rabbit hole trying to pick my first serious pro lens. I have a wedding gig for a close friend coming up in late October here in Seattle and the weather is probably gonna be gray and rainy so I need something that can handle low light and maybe some moisture too. I have about $1800 saved up specifically for a standard zoom and I am literally losing sleep over the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art versus the Panasonic S Pro 24-70mm f2.8.

The Sigma is so much cheaper and everyone says the Art series is basically legendary for sharpness but then I read these forums where people say the Panasonic S Pro has that special look and the build quality is on another level because of the Leica certification thing. Is the S Pro actually worth the extra thousand dollars though?? I'm worried if I go with the Sigma I'll regret not having the native Panasonic Sync IS or whatever they call it or that the autofocus won't be as snappy during the ceremony when the bride is walking down the aisle. But then if I buy the Panasonic I'm totally blowing my entire budget and wont have anything left for a backup battery or a nice flash. I keep looking at comparison videos and one person says the Sigma has better colors and the next says the Panasonic is the only way to go if you want professional results. My hands are literally shaking while typing this because I dont want to screw up my friends wedding photos by picking the wrong glass and being stuck with something that hunts for focus or feels cheap.

Does the Sigma Art actually hold up against the S Pro in real world wedding scenarios or is the Panasonic significantly better for the L-mount system specifically?

Regarding what Michaelfusly said about being happy with the Sigma, I totally get it... the Art glass is usually great for the money. But honestly, I've been through enough high-stakes wedding days to know that gear stress is the last thing you want. In my experience, when you're shooting on something like the Panasonic Lumix S5II, staying native makes a massive difference.

  • The autofocus communication is just a bit more locked in for those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
  • Native glass usually handles the specific weather conditions in Seattle better because the seals are designed for that exact mount.
  • You'll appreciate the build quality more when you're actually out in the field and things get hectic. Just go with the Panasonic. You can't go wrong with any of their pro series glass for a wedding. It's a lot of money, yeah, but the peace of mind is worth every penny when you're trying to deliver for a friend. Honestly, dont overthink it too much, just get any of the Panasonic pro lenses and focus on the shots.

im super happy with the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. shot a dark wedding in the rain last year and it stayed locked on focus the whole time... no regrets.
