Ive been shooting M-mount for a decade but finally grabbed an SL2 for the better EVF. Honestly, the native L-mount prices are just soul-crushing right now. I have a backyard wedding shoot in three weeks and need a 85mm under $700. Should I just grab the Sigma or is there a hidden gem Im missing?

Since youve been on M-mount for years, you might actually like the TTArtisan 90mm f1.25 L-Mount. Its fully manual but the bokeh is wild for under $500. If you need AF though, look at the Sigma MC-21 Mount Converter EF to L paired with a used Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM. Solid budget workaround.

honestly been thinking about that backyard wedding scenario... those can be tricky if the light starts dropping. before you buy anything, what kind of lighting are we looking at for the ceremony? just want to make sure the af can actually keep up if things get dim. if youre looking for reliability on a budget, you gotta be careful with some of the cheaper glass. here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • watch out for weather sealing. if its a backyard thing, dust or a surprise drizzle could mess with a lens that isnt properly gasketed.
  • af reliability is huge. some budget lenses hunt like crazy in low light, and you dont want to miss the big moments because the motor was searching.
  • check the firmware situation. some of these newer third-party brands need a specific dock to update, which is just one more thing to buy and lose. since youre an m-mount pro, maybe look into adapting some older high-quality vintage glass? it might be safer than a cheap af lens that lets you down at the wrong moment. or honestly... have you thought about just renting a pro-grade lens for the weekend? might be the smartest move for a one-off gig and keeps you way under budget.

Youre gonna love the SL2 sensor! But seriously, be careful with those budget autofocus options that feel like hollow plastic. I tried one for a similar backyard gig and the autofocus hunted so much in the shadows I missed the kiss! It was a total nightmare. Honestly, if youve been shooting M-mount for ten years, you have a superpower. I started adapting old vintage 85mm glass from the 70s and the results are just magical on that Leica sensor. Just a huge warning tho: dont cheap out on the adapter! I bought a bargain-bin one once and it had so much play that the lens actually wobbled. If youre shooting a wedding, that light leak will kill your contrast. Go for a solid, one-piece manual adapter. It keeps the setup feeling like a real tool rather than a computer peripheral. Plus, using your muscle memory from the M system on that gorgeous EVF is a game changer! Its honestly so much more rewarding than fighting a budget motor.
