Anyone know the best budget glass for a used SL2? I totally blew my budget on the body and now I only have like 900 left for a lens before my trip next month. I'm torn between the Sigma 28-70 contemporary and the Panasonic 50mm 1.8 since it's cheap. Is the Sigma worth the extra cash for street stuff?
tbh I grabbed the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary for the build. At 325g, you dont feel the weight, though the autofocus is slightly slower. Let me know if you need more specs!
To add to the point above: unfortunately that zoom is kinda mushy. Grab these:
- Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f1.8
- Sigma 45mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary Way better glass for your trip.
Look, I've been shooting L-mount since the original SL launched and honestly, blowing your budget on the body then scrambling for glass is a classic move... i did the exact same thing. Unfortunately, my experience with the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary was pretty disappointing. A week-long street photography trip to Chicago last year proved it just feels wrong on the SL2. It’s light, sure, but it felt like a plastic toy in the hand and the corners were way softer than I expected. Low light autofocus hunting was another headache that ruined a few really good shots near the subway stations. While the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 is fine for the price, it feels kind of soul-less. After buying one thinking it’d be a lightweight daily driver, the rendering just came off as too clinical. It is basically the opposite of what you want when you're chasing that Leica look. Tbh if I had 900 bucks right now, I’d skip that zoom and look at the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary instead. It’s built way better with that all-metal feel and actually fits the SL2 vibe. Zooming with your feet is better than dealing with the mushy corners on that 28-70 anyway. Just my two cents after wasting money on gear that didnt live up to the hype...
^ This. Also, totally agree that those smaller primes are way better than the 28-70! I just found this thread and honestly, I had the same heart attack when I saw Leica lens prices lol. If you want something that actually feels solid on the SL2, you really gotta check out the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. I bought mine used and it is an absolute beast! The image quality is just fantastic and it feels super reliable... unlike some of the plastic-y options. It is heavy tho, like really heavy. If you want more range for your trip, the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. is another amazing choice. I have taken mine through some pretty dusty trails and it never missed a beat. The f4 might seem slow but the dual IS is like magic for handheld shots! The Sigma is definitely better if you want that creamy background for street portraits, but the Panasonic is just such a reliable travel buddy. Both are miles better than that 28-70 contemporary, trust me!
