got a big headshot gig in NYC next Thursday and my current zoom just isnt cutting it for the look I want on my SL2. Ive been looking hard at the 50mm f2 Summicron-SL since its so sharp but then I read some threads saying the 90mm APO is the gold standard for skin tones and compression.

so I was thinking maybe the 50 is too wide for tight shots? but then I worry the 90 is too long for the small studio space I booked. my logic was to maybe split the difference with the 75mm but people say that focal length is a weird compromise and now im just totally stuck. i have about 5k to spend and need to pull the trigger tonight to get shipping in time. what do you guys actually use for pro work?

Unfortunately, I have had issues using the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 ASPH for tight headshots. It is incredibly sharp, maybe even too sharp for skin, but the perspective distortion on a close-up face is just not as good as I expected for a lens at that price. Noses look a bit prominent and it just doesnt flatter the subject like a longer lens does. If you are in a cramped NYC studio, the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 90mm f/2 ASPH is gonna be a massive struggle. I have been in that exact spot and ended up literally pressed against the back wall trying to frame a shot. It is a legendary lens but it is just not practical for small spaces. Here is what I suggest for a pro look without the headache:

  • Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75mm f/2 ASPH is actually the sweet spot for small studios. People call it a compromise, but for headshots in a tight room, it is your best friend.
  • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art L-Mount is way more cost-effective and honestly, the rendering is smoother than the Leica f/2 primes for portraits.
  • Panasonic Lumix S PRO 85mm f/1.8 is a great budget backup if you want to save that 5k for other gear. I would personally grab the 75mm Leica if you want to stay in the ecosystem. It feels a bit weird at first but once you see the compression without the 90mm distance requirement, you will get why it exists. Lmk if you need help with lighting setups too... good luck with the gig!
