what zoom lens should I get for the Panasonic S5II that does everything? i honestly have no idea what I am doing and am so confused by the numbers.

I have a trip to Japan in three weeks and only $900 left. is there one lens that just works? sorry if this is a dumb question...

i dealt with the same confusion when i first got into l-mount systems. for a japan trip with a $900 cap the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount is a very solid choice. i used it during a two-week trek through osaka and it stayed on my s5ii almost 90% of the time tbh. here are some quick points on why it works:

  • f/2.8 aperture lets in more light which is great for temples and night markets
  • compact size makes it easy to carry in a small bag while touring
  • sharpness is decent across the zoom range for the price the main trade-off is it isnt quite as wide as the Panasonic Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 which is another option if you prefer landscapes over low light. both are reliable but the sigma is generally better for a one-lens setup...
