I just got the Panasonic S5II for my trip to Maine next month and I'm so hyped but also totally lost! I'm a complete beginner so sorry if this is dumb but what's the best zoom lens that does everything for around $1000? I just want one lens that stays on the camera forever basically...

Congrats on picking up the S5II, honestly its such a capable body. If you want one lens that basically stays on the camera forever, I have been extremely satisfied with the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary L-Mount. It fits your $1000 budget perfectly and the technical specs are solid for the price. Here is why it works well for a trip:

  • Constant f/2.8 aperture: This lets you shoot in low light without your photos getting grainy, which is huge for forest shots.
  • Compact size: Its way smaller than the pro-grade zooms but still delivers professional sharpness across the frame.
  • Versatile range: 28mm is wide enough for landscapes and 70mm works for portraits. Another option if you want more reach is the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. which has amazing stabilization tho it is a bit heavier. Let me know if you want to dive deeper into the data!
