Ive been shooting street for ages mostly with my old M6 and manual focus lenses but honestly my eyes are getting a bit tired and I just picked up the Panasonic S5IIx for video work and decided Im gonna try it for my street stuff too since the phase detect is finally good. I thought picking a lens would be easy but there are so many options now its actually kinda paralyzing lol. Like the Sigma I-series looks so cool and tactile which I love because of the aperture rings but then there are the Panasonic 1.8 primes which are all the same size and weight which is super handy for gimbal work if I swap.

Im moving to Tokyo in three weeks for a two month personal project and I need something fast and reliable for those crowded Shinjuku alleys. My budget is roughly $900 give or take for this one. I used to be a 35mm purist but lately 50mm has been calling my name for tighter portraits of people in the crowds. Im looking for something that isnt a total brick because I walk like 15 miles a day when Im out there. Should I go for the Sigma 35mm f2 or maybe that new Lumix 35mm or should I just go 50mm and call it a day? What are you guys using on your L-mount bodies for street stuff these days?

Tokyo is honestly a dream for street stuff, especially those narrow alleys in Shinjuku. I have spent a lot of time shooting there over the years and having a fast setup is key. In my experience, if you are coming from that M6 background, you are really gonna appreciate the build of the Sigma lenses. I have tried many different brands on my L-mount bodies, but Sigma just nails that tactile feel. Just get any of those Sigma metal primes and you will be set. They feel like real tools rather than plastic toys. If you are worried about the weight for those 15 mile days tho, the Panasonic primes are probably a safer bet. They are so light you barely feel them on the camera. Honestly, go with Sigma if you want the soul, or Panasonic if you want the utility. Both brands are killing it right now for the S5IIx. Have an amazing trip, you are gonna get some incredible shots!
