Ive shot Nikon glass for ages but finally moved to a Z8 for my Dolomites trip next month and the choice of S-line glass is honestly kinda overwhelming. I need something that can handle landscapes but also some street stuff without swapping constantly. Whats the best all-around lens for Nikon Z mount cameras right now?
To add to the point above: if you really want to maximize that Z8 sensor, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is the gold standard. I've found it's basically like carrying a bag of primes.
- f/2.8 aperture: Essential for low-light street stuff.
- OLED display: Handy for checking focus distance at night. It is a heavy beast tho, but the image quality is honestly just on another level. You wont regret the extra weight once you see those files.
I've tried many setups over the years, but you really cant beat the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S for a trip like that.
- 24-120mm f/4 S: Incredible range, super sharp, basically the perfect travel lens.
- 24-70mm f/4 S: Way more compact and cheaper, but you will definitely miss that extra reach in the mountains. Honestly, just grab the 120mm. It saves so much hassle.
Late to the party but if you're watching your budget after buying a Z8, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR is a total sleeper hit. Its not S-line, but super practical for one-lens travel.
- Focal range: covers wide valleys to tight street shots.
- Portability: way lighter for long hikes.
- Value: tons of utility for the price. It gets the job done without the pro-lens bulk. Have an awesome trip!
To add to the point above, I'm honestly feeling your pain with this. Deciding on the perfect setup for a trip like the Dolomites is such a massive headache and it's so easy to get paralyzed by all the options. I've spent weeks agonizing over my own gear before and it's just exhausting trying to find that balance. You definitely have to be careful because the weight of some of this glass is no joke when you're on a trail. It's a lot of pressure to get it right for such a beautiful place, especially with a beast like the Nikon Z8. I would suggest really thinking about how much weight you can carry for hours on end before you commit. I’m curious tho, are you planning on doing a lot of intense hiking or will you be staying closer to the car? And do you think you'll be shooting much at sunrise or sunset when the light gets really tricky?
Saving this whole thread. So much good info here you guys are awesome.
