i just got a d850 for my sisters graduation in June but i have no idea where to start with lenses. my logic was that a lens that doesnt zoom makes better blurry backgrounds but im totally lost. should i get an 85mm or 50mm? i only have about 400 bucks left... sorry if this is dumb

> i only have about 400 bucks left Building on the earlier suggestion, you really cant go wrong with an 85mm for graduation shots! Since youre on a $400 budget, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G is basically the gold standard. It creates that gorgeous compression that makes people look fantastic, and the bokeh is super creamy. If you find yourself in tighter spots, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is a total steal and way under your budget, which is great for full-body shots. But honestly? The 85mm is gonna give you that wow factor for the D850. Another killer option if you can find it used is the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD because it has vibration reduction which is a lifesaver if your hands get shaky! Just grab one and start practicing, youll do amazing!

Like someone mentioned, that 85mm f/1.8 is a beast for the price. I have been super satisfied with mine for years and it never lets me down. Since youre on a budget, definitely look at used gear to stretch that $400:

honestly, for those graduation portraits, i would suggest leaning toward the 85mm instead of the 50mm. the d850 is such a beast and it really shines with that longer focal length. i remember when i first started out, i grabbed a 50mm thinking it was the safest bet, but i ended up hating how close i had to stand to get a good shot. it made my sisters graduation photos feel a bit distorted and awkward, tbh. once i switched to the longer glass, the background just melted away exactly how i wanted it to. but definitely be careful... make sure whatever you pick up has a quick motor because that high resolution sensor is really unforgiving if your focus is off by even a hair. id also suggest double checking for any hidden damage if you buy used to stay under your budget. you got this tho, its gonna look great!
