What is the best all-around lens for Nikon Z series cameras?

Finally moved to the Z7 II after years with my D850 but the FTZ adapter is killing me with the weight balance and I'm panicking because my Iceland trip is in three weeks. I need one lens that stays on the body 90% of the time so I'm not swapping glass in the rain. Usually shoot landscapes but I need some reach for the random puffin or whatever.

  • budget around $1300
  • must be weather sealed
  • sharp enough for the 45mp sensor
  • light for hiking

Is the 24-120mm f4 the play here or does it soft out at the edges? Or should I just go 24-70 and crop? I'm so lost...

Unfortunately, I had issues with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S because cropping into that 45MP sensor wasnt as sharp as I expected for wildlife. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is the most practical choice for Iceland. Quick tip: keep your subject centered at 120mm to avoid the slight corner softness. Its a necessary compromise for the weight and budget.
