What is the absolute best macro lens I can get for my Nikon DX setup before next weekend? Okay so I am freaking out a little because my sisters wedding is coming up fast and she basically begged me to do the close up ring and flower shots but I realized my kit lens just isnt cutting it for that super close detail work. I am using a D7500 so I need something that actually works well with the crop sensor and wont break the bank.

I have been looking at two main ones but I am totally torn. First is the Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G because it is super cheap and small but I am worried I will have to get way too close to the rings and end up blocking my own light with the camera body. Like the working distance seems tiny? Then there is the 85mm f/3.5G ED VR which is specifically for DX cameras too. It has the vibration reduction which sounds great because my hands get kind of shaky when I am under pressure but it is almost double the price of the 40mm.

I also saw some people mentioning the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di but I am worried about compatibility or autofocus speed on my Nikon body since I dont have time to deal with returns or firmware updates if it acts buggy. I am located in a pretty rural area so I have to order this online tonight to get it here in time for the rehearsal dinner in Virginia.

My budget is strictly under $500. Is the 85mm worth the extra money for the extra reach and VR or should I just get the 40mm and try to be careful with my shadows? Or is there some other hidden gem I am missing for DX users? I really need to make a decision in the next few hours so I can get shipping started...

I would be very careful with that 40mm option. Using it in the past taught me that the working distance is a total nightmare for wedding details. You have to get the lens almost touching the rings to get that 1:1 magnification. You are definitely gonna block your own light or cast a shadow from the camera body, which is the last thing you want to deal with during a ceremony. For a high-pressure event like your sisters wedding, that is a risk I really wouldnt take. The Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR is a much better fit for your D7500. It is a reliable choice for this specific task. Having the extra reach means you can stay back a comfortable distance, making lighting the flowers or jewelry way easier. Also, the VR is basically a lifesaver if you are feeling shaky or if the room lighting is dim. It should stay right around your $500 budget if you find a good deal online tonight. I would stay away from the third-party glass for now since you dont have time to troubleshoot. While the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Macro F017 is a fantastic lens, it sometimes has autofocus issues on certain bodies without a firmware update. Stick to the Nikon 85mm. It is a safer, more professional choice that wont give you any compatibility headaches. Just make sure to test the autofocus as soon as it arrives so you are ready for Virginia.
