honestly so done with my current kit lens it is literally ruining my shots and the sharpness is just non-existent. I tried carrying my heavy 70-200 last time but my neck was killing me after two hours walking around and it was just a nightmare. I need one single zoom lens that can actually do it all for my a7iii because im going to Japan in three weeks and i cant be swapping lenses every five minutes in the rain.
- budget is like 1100 absolute max
- has to be light enough for all day carry
- need a decent range for street and some landscape
what are you guys actually using for travel because im ready to just give up on this setup...
I have been shooting Sony for years and I can tell you that Japan involves an incredible amount of walking, so weight is everything. For a single-lens setup under 1100, you really might want to consider the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. It covers almost everything and the image quality blows any basic kit lens out of the water. A few things I would be careful about though:
- make sure to grab a simple rain cover because even weather-sealed lenses can fail in a downpour
- watch your shutter speeds when you are zoomed in at f/5.6 to avoid camera shake
- check the lens firmware is updated for the best autofocus tracking before you leave I would suggest this over a standard 24-70 since you mentioned needing range for street and landscapes. Its light enough for all-day carry and keeps you from having to swap glass in the rain... honestly a lifesaver.
