Ive been shooting Sony for 5 years mostly using 35mm and 85mm primes but I’m moving to Tokyo next month and really dont want to be swapping glass on the subway. The 24-70 GM II is heavy for a daily carry though. Whats the absolute best all-around lens for the A7IV that balances size and sharpness?

Youre gonna be walking a ton in Tokyo so honestly, leave the heavy glass at home. I would suggest looking at the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G for your A7IV. Its basically the perfect travel lens because of that extra width at 20mm, which helps a lot in those narrow city streets. Just be careful with a few things:

  • the f/4 aperture might feel a bit slow when you're shooting night scenes in Shinjuku or Golden Gai
  • make sure to keep a microfiber cloth handy because the humidity there is no joke I made the mistake of carrying a massive setup my first time there and regretted it by lunch... sticking to something lighter like that Sony or even the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 will save your shoulders while keeping things sharp.
