honestly so fed up with my current setup its actually ruining the excitement for my trip to Japan in three weeks. i have an a7iv and ive been lugging around three different primes-a 35, a 50, and an 85-and i am just done with it. every time i want to take a photo of a cool building i have the 85 on and by the time i swap to the 35 the light has changed or i just feel like a total tourist fumbling with my bag in the middle of a crowded sidewalk. it sucks.
so i was thinking i finally need to just bite the bullet and get a proper all-around zoom but there are too many options and i keep going in circles. my logic was that the sony 24-70 gm ii is the obvious choice since its the best glass but is it worth the $2300? i have about 2k saved up for this but i also need money for actual food and stuff while im there lol. then i saw the sigma 24-70 art and the tamron 28-75 g2 and now im stuck. the tamron is so light which sounds amazing for walking 20k steps a day in tokyo but will i regret not having that extra 4mm on the wide end?
i do a lot of street photography but i also want to take some nice portraits of my girlfriend without it looking like a flat kit lens photo. im so excited to finally have a decent kit but the fear of picking the wrong 'one lens' is driving me crazy. is the 24-105 f4 even an option or is f4 gonna be way too slow for night shots in shinjuku? i feel like im overthinking this but i just want something sharp that doesnt weigh a ton and can handle everything from wide landscapes to decent bokeh for portraits. what do you guys actually use when you only want to carry one thing all day? i need to buy something by next friday so i can test it out before the flight...
Ive been super happy with the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art on my a7iv. The new version is way lighter than the old one and the edge-to-edge sharpness is incredible for the price. Quick tips:
- Get the f/2.8 zoom. Youll definitely need that faster aperture for Shinjuku at night.
- That 24mm field of view is 84 degrees vs only 75 degrees on a 28mm. Huge difference for tight streets. Honestly, no complaints.
