So I finally upgraded to a Sony A7IV and I'm looking to get a dedicated portrait lens because the kit lens is just not doing it for me especially for low light stuff. I have my sisters engagement shoot coming up in like three weeks at a park near Seattle so I need something fast and reliable. I'm really torn between the Sony 85mm f1.8 and the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art.
The Sony is way cheaper and lighter which is nice for hiking to the spot but that Sigma bokeh looks so creamy in all the reviews Ive seen online. I'm also slightly considering the 50mm f1.2 GM but honestly thats probably overkill for my budget right now which is strictly under $1100. I mainly want that sharp eye autofocus performance because I dont want to miss any shots when they are moving around. The Sigma is right at the top of my budget but the weight is kind of a concern for me if I'm walking around all day. On the other hand is the f1.8 on the Sony enough for that really blurry background look or am I gonna regret not getting the faster glass? Which one would you guys pick for a rainy outdoor shoot?
Saw this earlier but just now getting a chance to reply. Like someone mentioned, the bokeh on the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art is absolutely amazing! For an important engagement shoot, the f1.4 aperture provides much better subject separation in open spaces. Honestly, if you can swing the $1100 budget, go for it. Its a fantastic investment over the Sony FE 85mm f1.8. You wont regret the extra weight once you see the files!
Saw this earlier and wanted to chime in since I have actually owned both. I started out with the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 and was perfectly satisfied for a long time. It is stupid light and the focus is basically instant, which is nice for candid stuff. But eventually, I upgraded to the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art and honestly, I havent looked back once. A few technical things to consider for your Seattle shoot:
- The Sigma has way better weather sealing for that Northwest mist.
- That f1.4 really helps with subject separation if the park background is busy or messy.
- The DN version of the Sigma is much lighter than the older models, so it wont kill your neck. The Sony is great value, but if you can swing the budget, the Sigma colors and contrast are just richer. Ngl, the bokeh on the Sigma feels more professional for engagement shots. Good luck with the shoot tho!
