What is the absolute best budget telephoto lens for a Canon R10 right now because I'm getting really mixed signals from different reviews. I keep seeing people recommend the RF 100-400mm as the best value pick but then others say the f8 aperture makes it basically useless if you arent in direct sunlight.
I live in the PNW where it's always cloudy so I'm worried about that. I also looked at the tiny 55-210mm since it's so cheap but is 210mm even enough for birds at a distance? My budget is strictly under $600 and I need to grab something before a hiking trip in three weeks. Should I just get an adapter and look for an old EF lens instead or is sticking with native RF better for the autofocus speed...
Honestly, just grab the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM. I've been using it for a while now and honestly, I'm super satisfied with how it performs even on gloomier days. People get all worked up about the f/8 aperture but with modern sensors like the one in your R10, you can just bump the ISO to 3200 or even 6400 without breaking a sweat. It works well and the weight is perfect for hiking. Dont bother with the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM for birds... 210mm is just too short and you'll end up frustrated. Also, sticking with native glass is better because the autofocus speed is way more reliable than using an adapter for old EF lenses. Just trust the high ISO and you'll be fine.
