Ive been shooting on Canon for like ten years now, mostly sticking to my old T3i and then a 80D for the longest time but I finally made the jump to mirrorless with the R10 last month. Honestly the autofocus is kind of insane compared to what I was used to, its like magic. But here is the thing, I cheaped out and only got the 18-45mm kit lens and man it is just not cutting it for the stuff I actually want to do. I mostly do portraits of my nieces and nephews and the background blur—or lack of it—is driving me crazy. Since the R10 is a crop sensor I keep getting confused about what focal length I actually need because a 50mm is gonna act like an 80mm which is fine but maybe a bit tight for indoors?

Im trying to find something that wont break the bank because I spent most of my fun money on the body itself. I have about 350 maybe 400 dollars max to spend before my sisters big family reunion in two weeks and I really want to get those nice creamy shots. I was looking at the RF 50mm 1.8 because its so cheap but Ive heard mixed things about the motor noise and how it feels on the R bodies. Or should I just get an adapter and look for an old EF 85mm? I dont know if adding the bulk of the EF-EOS R adapter is gonna make the whole setup feel unbalanced since the R10 is so tiny.

  • Budget: strictly under $400 (new or used is fine)
  • Timeline: Need it by the end of the month
  • Use case: Headshots and candid family portraits
  • Preference: native RF would be nice but Im open to adapting if the glass is way better

Also is third party even an option yet? I know Canon was being weird about the license for the RF mount autofocus stuff. I saw some Meike or TTArtisan stuff online but Im worried about the image quality being too soft wide open. Just really looking for that sweet spot of sharp eyes and blurry backgrounds without spending L-series money...

Honestly the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is your best bet for a reliable setup. Its native and light, so it wont make your R10 feel front-heavy like an adapted lens would. If you find 50mm too tight indoors, maybe look for a used Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM. I prefer sticking with Canon glass to avoid any autofocus glitches with third-party brands.
