I honestly dont know what to do anymore with this setup and im starting to regret even upgrading to the R5 Mark II if I cant find a lens that actually works for everything I do. Ive been trying to make my old EF 24-70 work with the adapter but the autofocus keeps hunting at the worst times and its honestly just so bulky and heavy for a mirrorless body it feels like a brick in my hands. I have a huge family trip to the Dolomites coming up in literally ten days and I need one lens that can stay on the camera 90% of the time because I am so done with carrying a bag full of primes and switching them out every five minutes while everyone else is waiting for me. I need something that can handle the 45mp sensor without looking soft but everything is so expensive or out of stock right now. My requirements are pretty specific:

  • Budget is around 2800 max but id prefer less if possible
  • Must be native RF mount because I am sick of adapters
  • Sharp enough for professional landscape prints but fast enough for candids of the kids
  • Not going to break my back after 8 hours of hiking

Should I just bite the bullet on the 24-105 f4 or is the 24-70 f2.8 worth the extra weight and cash? Or am I missing something else entirely that fixes this mess...

Honestly, you might want to be careful with the f2.8 weight for hiking. I would suggest the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM instead. Its way lighter and that extra reach is basically essential for mountain peaks.

  • sharp enough for big prints
  • way cheaper than the 2.8 version
  • wont kill your neck on the trails The f4 aperture is usually fine outdoors, and its much easier to carry all day!
