I finally pulled the trigger on the R6 and I am so pumped to start shooting!! Im heading to Italy next month and I really dont want to be swapping lenses constantly while walking around. I spent all night reading reviews and everyone says the 24-105mm f4L is the perfect travel lens but then I saw threads saying f4 is a letdown in low light like inside churches. People say to just get the 24-70mm f2.8 but thats way over my $1500 budget and looks heavy as hell for walking around Rome all day. Is there a middle ground I'm missing or is the f4 really good enough for everything? Whats the absolute best all-arounder if I can only bring one?
@Reply #1 - good point! Totally agree about the ISO performance. Over the years I have learned that f4 is basically plenty for travel. Since you are watching the budget, here is my plan:
- Buy the Canon RF 24-105mm f4L IS USM refurbished to save hundreds.
- Grab a Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM for dark churches.
- Use the savings for better wine. Honestly, dont overthink it. Just enjoy Italy!
I spent two weeks in Florence with the Canon RF 24-105mm f4L IS USM and it was incredible! Honestly, I politely disagree about that f4 being a letdown. The R6 sensor is a total beast! Quick tip: just trust the IBIS and crank the ISO to 6400 in those dark churches. Youll get amazing shots without the f2.8 weight.
