My head is spinning trying to find a lens for my R50 before my Japan trip. I saw the 50mm 1.8 is the classic cheap choice but people say it's way too tight on an APS-C sensor. I'm on a strict $250 budget and just need one solid prime. What is actually the top budget prime for this camera?
Honestly, stay away from the 50mm for Japan. Its way too tight on that R50. I would suggest these instead:
- Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM: Better field of view but might be slightly over your $250 budget.
- Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM: Fits the price but be careful with the heavy corner distortion. Make sure to save for the 28mm if you can. Its much more versatile for travel.
Building on the earlier suggestion, I actually disagree about native glass. Just get the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM!
- Super sharp
- Crazy tiny Its amazing!
Saw this late, but you gotta watch that 1.6x crop factor. A 50mm hits like an 80mm, which is just way too tight for crowded Tokyo alleys. TBH, I made that mistake once and missed tons of street shots. Tracking the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM on the Canon Refurbished site is your best bet for the budget. Make sure to check the vignetting data on OpticalLimits before you commit tho.
