I just bought a Canon 90D and I'm honestly so lost. I want to take photos of my sister for her birthday next month but everything online confuses me. People say get a prime lens for those blurry backgrounds but I dont know which one to buy.

My logic was the bigger the number the better? So I looked at an 85mm but then someone said it's actually way longer on my camera because of the sensor and now I'm just frustrated. I only have about 400 bucks and dont want to waste it. Is 50mm better or is that too small? Sorry if this is basic I just have no idea where to start...

Honestly, the entry-level prime lens is not as good as expected because it is way too soft on that 90D sensor. I had issues with it hunting for focus constantly. Unfortunately, that camera really needs higher quality glass to actually look sharp. Since you have 400 bucks, you can actually afford something that doesnt feel like a plastic toy.

  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art
  • This is roughly 48mm on your camera, so its basically a normal lens. Very sharp.
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
  • Way better bokeh than the f/1.8 version but the focus motor is kinda prone to breaking if you arent careful. The 90D has a 1.6x crop factor, so just multiply the lens number by 1.6 to see how it actually behaves. 50mm becomes 80mm, which is the sweet spot for portraits tbh. Just dont expect miracles from the super cheap stuff.

Unfortunately that 85mm is way too long for a 90D. I had issues with it being too tight.
