Im finally grabbing an R5 for my sisters wedding in June! I saw the 50mm f1.2 is a legend but some reviews say the 35mm is more versatile for tight spaces. Im lost.

  • budget is under $2300
  • low light is huge
  • fast autofocus

Which prime is actually worth the glass?

Id be careful about only taking a 50mm to a wedding venue. It can be a gamble if the aisles are narrow or the room is small. You might want to consider the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM instead. It is a more reliable L-series choice for indoor coverage and fits your budget easily. Just make sure to practice with that new linear motor... it feels kinda different than traditional USM tho.

Just seeing this now! Honestly, if you are shooting a wedding with an R5, you need the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM. Its the absolute ultimate workhorse for low light and the reliability is unmatched. I've used mine in some really sketchy lighting and it just nails focus every single time... it's easily my favorite piece of glass in the kit. Here is why it wins for me:

  • the f/1.2 aperture is a total lifesaver for those dark indoor receptions
  • tack sharp even wide open which is rare for such a fast lens
  • build quality is amazing and meant for professional use The 35mm is nice for wide shots but that 50mm compression and look is what clients actually want to see. Since your budget is $2300, this fits perfectly. Youll love how it handles those emotional candlelit moments. Just make sure you have plenty of space on your cards because you wont want to stop shooting with it!
