I am honestly so fed up with my old Canon setup, it is just way too bulky and the autofocus keeps hunting during my night shoots and I am just ready to sell it all and move to Fuji. I have been obsessing over the X-T5 for months and I am so hyped to finally make the jump but man the price is still sitting so high everywhere I look. I have been checking B&H and Adorama daily but the EDU discounts for Fuji seem totally non-existent for this specific model right now which is super frustrating because I am a full-time student and every dollar counts when you are living on ramen lol.
Here is what I am working with:
- Budget: around 1800 max for body and maybe a small prime
- Location: I am based in the US
- Timeline: really need to have it in my hands before my study abroad trip in three weeks
- Use case: mostly street photography and some light video for my journalism classes
Has anyone found a way to get a student discount on this thing lately or does Fuji just not do that for their newer bodies? I have heard people mention SheerID but nothing is popping up for the T5 specifically and I am starting to panic a little bit that I will have to pay full retail...
To add to the point above: unfortunately, Fuji student deals are disappointing for this model.
- Check Fujifilm X-T5 40MP Mirrorless open-box units.
- Monitor refurbished stock. Its not as good as expected.
Honestly, been shooting with Fuji gear for a decade now and Ive noticed they are super protective of their flagship bodies when it comes to EDU discounts. In my experience, they usually push students toward the X-S series or older models. Its a bummer, but since you are on a tight timeline for that trip, you gotta look at other ways to stretch that 1800 bucks. I have bought and sold a ton of gear over the years and here is how I would play it to get under budget:
- Skip the new retail stores and go straight to used sites like MPB. You can usually find a Fujifilm X-T5 Mirrorless Camera Body in mint condition for around 1500 or 1600. That leaves you just enough for a decent lens.
- For street work and journalism, you really cant beat the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR Lens. Its tiny, weather-sealed, and focuses way faster than your old Canon probably did.
- If you find the T5 is still too pricey even used, look at the Fujifilm X-T4 Mirrorless Camera Body. It still has great IBIS and the same film sims, just a slightly lower res sensor. Tbh the X-T5 is a beast for street stuff because of those dedicated dials, but dont let the hype make you overspend right before a trip. That 40MP sensor is gorgeous tho, so I get why you want it. Just check the used listings daily because they move fast. Youll definitely notice the AF improvement over your old setup, especially in low light... fuji's face detection has come a long way.
