Does Amazon discount Canon RF lenses during Prime Day sales?

Ive been staring at the cart for the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L for like a week now because I have this wedding gig in late August and really need the glass but my budget is pretty firm at $2000 so I'm hoping for a miracle. I did some digging and saw one price tracker saying they did like 10% off last year but then this other guy on a gear forum said it was only the nifty fifty and the cheap RF-S stuff that gets the Prime Day love. So I was thinking... does Canon even let Amazon drop prices on the high end L series? My logic was they might want to clear stock but honestly it feels like a gamble. Anyone actually seen the pro glass go on sale or am I just wasting time waiting...

@Reply #1 - spot on. Canon MAP (minimum advertised price) rules are super strict, so authorized dealers like Amazon cant just slash prices on the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM whenever they want. If you do see a massive discount on Amazon during Prime Day, watch out. It is almost certainly a grey market import from a third-party seller, meaning zero US warranty. Definitely not worth the risk for a paid wedding gig. Instead, keep a close eye on the Canon USA Refurbished store. They run these random refurbished sales where they knock 10% to 15% off. I grabbed my Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM that way and it literally looked brand new. A refurbished 24-70mm usually drops to around $1899 during those promos, and you still get the full 1-year warranty. Much safer than waiting on Prime Day.

@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, saving money on high-end glass is all about being smart and safe, not just waiting for Prime Day miracles. Since MAP pricing rules are so strict, Amazon almost never drops the price legitimately on the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8 L IS USM. But dont lose hope! If your budget is firm at $2000, you have fantastic options. Canon refurbished is absolutely amazing and they often run promo sales that drop it way below your budget. Another awesome hack? Just rent the lens for your August wedding! It is super cheap and lets you pocket the cash until a real refurbished deal pops up. I did this last year and it was an amazing stress-free way to get the job done!

In my experience, Canon rarely drops prices on high-end glass like the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM for Prime Day. Canon keeps tight control over L-series pricing to protect their authorized dealers. Instead of waiting, you have safer options:

  • Check the official Canon USA refurbished store for direct warranties.
  • Buy used from reputable sites like MPB to stay under budget safely. Waiting for Prime Day is risky if you have a hard deadline.
