Ive been shooting with a bulky DSLR for years but I am finally trying to downsize for my Japan trip next month. I cant believe how much prices have spiked lately, everything cheap is like 800 bucks now. Its so annoying.

  • under $500 with a kit lens
  • fast AF for street shots
  • compact body

Are there any hidden sales or older models I should look for?

Coming back to this... honestly, under 500 is a tough bracket now. I've tried many setups over the years, and the Sony Alpha a6000 with 16-50mm Lens is still the king of budget street photography because of that fast phase-detect AF. Taking one to Kyoto years ago really proved its worth. Are you strictly looking for brand new gear, or is used gear okay? That opens up options like the Panasonic Lumix GX85 with 12-32mm Lens.

To add to the point above: the Sony is a classic but I actually disagree slightly on it being the best value right now. Prices for used Sonys have stayed high, but I have been so satisfied with the Micro Four Thirds system for traveling light. I took an older Olympus to Tokyo last year and it was a dream for street photography.

  • Look for a used Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II with 14-42mm II R Lens or even the Mark III.
  • The in-body stabilization is a lifesaver for night street shots when you dont have a tripod.
  • You can find these for like $350 to $450 on sites like MPB or KEH if you check daily. Honestly I have no complaints with the image quality and it leaves you extra cash for sushi and train passes. The lenses are way smaller than the Sony ones too so it actually fits in a jacket pocket. If you check the used market you can definitely stay under 500. Happy to help if you need more tips on where to look!
