I'm trying to get into photography because my phone just isn't cutting it for pictures of my toddler running around the backyard. Everyone keeps saying I should get a Sony Alpha but honestly looking at the website there are like fifty different versions and I have no idea what the difference is between an A7 and an A6400 or whatever. My budget is probably around $1200 but that has to include a lens too I think? I'm based in Chicago and I've checked Best Buy but everything seems so expensive right now. I'm hoping to get something before my sisters wedding next month. Are there like secret sites for this or maybe certain times of year when they go on sale? I keep hearing about gray market things but that sounds kinda sketchy and I dont want to get scammed. Does anyone know where the actual good discounts are for these cameras right now?
Honestly, i totally get the confusion with all those numbers and letters... sony has a million of them. I have been using their mirrorless line for a while now and honestly i have no complaints. For your budget, you definitely want to stay away from the sketchy gray market stuff. Its just not worth the headache if something breaks and you are stuck with a paperweight. I always stick to the big reputable shops because their warranties are solid and the customer service is actually helpful. Here is where i usually look for real deals:
- B&H Photo used section (they rate everything really strictly)
- Adorama open box or refurbished deals
- Local camera shops in Chicago like Central Camera Just grab any of the newer Alpha kits that fit your price range and you will be fine. Even the basic models are light years ahead of a phone for chasing kids around. You dont need the top tier pro gear to get great wedding shots anyway. Just make sure it includes a standard zoom lens and you are set!
