I've been shooting with an a7R IV for years and I usually know where to sniff out the open-box deals, but seriously everything is so expensive right now. I'm looking for a solid telephoto zoom for a big hiking trip next month and I'm really struggling to find any actual sales. Usually Greentoe or the EDU discounts at B&H come through but the inventory seems super thin lately.

Im looking for:

  • 70-200mm f/4 or maybe the 100-400mm if the price is right
  • budget is strictly under $1200
  • needs to ship to Denver by the 15th

Does anyone know a secret spot or a reliable used site that isnt just eBay? I checked KEH but their excellent grade stuff is almost retail price today...

The lens is great for hiking, but make sure to check for lens creep. Alternatively, Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is faster, tho it lacks optical stabilization. Be careful with shipping times this late... I wouldnt risk standard ground.

I had similar issues last year before a trip to Glacier. Unfortunately, used prices on the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS have skyrocketed lately. I tried buying from private forum sellers to save cash, but shipping delays and undisclosed wear made it a stressful experience not worth the minor savings. If your budget is tight, renting for the trip might actually be the most logical route to avoid overpaying right now.

Honestly, trying to get a Sony brand telephoto under 1200 bucks right now is tough unless you get lucky. Since youre hiking, weight and cost are key. Here are three options that actually fit the budget:

  • Sony FE 70-200mm f4 G OSS
  • You can find this used for around 800 or 900. Its super light and has internal zoom so dust doesnt get in while hiking. But its only f4 and the sharpness is a bit dated now.
  • Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 Di III VXD
  • Usually around 1000 new, cheaper used. You get that fast f2.8 and its incredibly light. Downside is no optical stabilization, but your camera body handles some of that anyway.
  • Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary
  • If you want the extra reach, this is way cheaper than the Sony version. Goes for around 900 new. Its a bit heavier and slow at f6.3 on the long end, but very sharp. Fred Miranda buy/sell forum is usually way better than KEH for quick shipping if you ask the seller nicely. Most guys there will ship USPS Priority if you cover the extra ten bucks.
