Hey everyone! I just picked up a Fujifilm X-E4 and I’m trying to keep it as an “everyday carry” camera — small, simple, and something I’ll actually bring with me instead of leaving it at home. Right now I’m mostly using the kit zoom, but I really want to switch to a prime lens that can basically live on the camera for daily stuff.
My typical use is pretty mixed: street shots while walking around town, casual portraits of friends/family, and random moments indoors (coffee shops, my apartment, evening hangouts). I’m not trying to shoot sports or anything, but I do want something that handles low light decently without pushing ISO into crunchy territory. I also love the X-E4’s compact vibe, so I’m a little worried about picking a lens that makes the setup feel front-heavy or defeats the “small rangefinder-style” point of the camera.
I’m torn between a few focal lengths because I can see pros/cons for each: something like 23mm for a wider everyday view, 27mm for maximum compactness, or 35mm for a more classic “subject-focused” look. I’m also unsure how much I should prioritize aperture (like f/1.4–f/2) versus size and autofocus speed for quick snapshots. Ideally I’d like to stay around a $500-ish budget (used is totally fine), and I’d prefer something that focuses reliably for candid moments rather than hunting a lot.
For those of you who’ve used the X-E4 as a daily camera, what prime lens do you think is the best all-around choice for everyday use — and why (focal length, size/weight, AF, low-light performance, etc.)?
Late to the party but i went through this exact X-E4 “leave-it-on” lens crisis lol… and tbh the big thing for me wasn’t just focal length, it was reliability/safety: like, will i actually bring it, will it focus when a moment happens, and will i feel ok carrying it around without babying it.
- I started with the pancake Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR (paid like $350 used). It was AMAZING for EDC… camera fit in a small sling, didn’t snag on jackets, and i felt way less likely to bump it into stuff in crowded cafes. AF was snappy enough for candids. Downside: indoors at night i was kinda living at higher ISO than i wanted.
- Then i tried Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR (around $400–$500 used). This one felt like the “safe bet” for me: still small, focuses reliably, and wider helped in apartments/coffee shops. Also WR gave me peace of mind when i got caught in random drizzle.
- I borrowed Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR for a week and loved the look, but indoors i kept backing up into furniture… and missed shots.
If you’re worried about hunting, i’d avoid the older slow-focusing stuff for daily snaps. Also, i know it’s boring, but WR + a small lens hood made me way less stressed carrying it daily. gl!!
For your situation, I’d suggest Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR as the best “leave-it-on” lens. It’s small enough to keep the X-E4 vibes, AF is quick/reliable for candid stuff, and f/2 is honestly decent indoors without getting huge. 35mm is nice but can feel tight in apartments. 27mm is cute but f/2.8 gets crunchy sooner… maybe? anyway, 23/2 is the safe daily pick imo
Seconding the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR rec from above. I ran that on an X-E body for like a year as my “leave it on” setup and it just… works. Not tiny-pancake, but still balanced and quick.
- Value: used it’s usually ~$350–$500, and you’re not paying the f/1.4 tax
- AF: snappy for candid stuff, less hunting than the older f/1.4s (in my experience)
- Low light: f/2 + Fuji IBIS-less bodies = keep shutter ~1/125 for people, bump ISO, done
- Practical tip: if you go 35mm, apartments/coffee shops get tight fast. 23mm is forgiving, right?
If you want max compact, Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR is soooo fun, but yeah you lose 1 stop. gl!
Spent a fortune trying to find the perfect everyday lens for my X-E4 and honestly... most of the compact Fuji primes have been kinda letdowns. The Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR was not as good as expected; the motor noise and the lack of a proper focus feel just killed the vibe. Unfortunately, the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR is annoying because it gets really hazy and soft if you are trying to do close-up food shots or details at f/2. Super disappointing for a daily driver. If you want my take, just grab the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR. It is a tiny bit bigger, but the image quality is way more consistent and it doesnt have those weird softness issues up close. Quick tip: since the X-E4 has zero grip, try DIYing a small leather or rubber patch onto the front with some double-sided tape. It looks a bit rough but stops the camera from sliding out of your hand. Also, grab a cheap thumb grip for the hot shoe... makes the whole setup way more secure for one-handed street snaps.
For your situation, I’d suggest Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR—ngl it’s basically made for the X-E4: tiny, fast/reliable AF, sharp, and used ~$300–$400. If low-light’s priority, maybe Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR (~$350–$500 used).
