Honestly im about to lose my mind with the older 56mm f1.2 because it keeps hunting for focus during my studio sessions and it is just so slow it makes me look like an amateur in front of clients. I spent a fortune on this X-H2S thinking it would solve my focus problems but the lens is just holding the whole system back and i have a huge outdoor wedding shoot in Seattle next Friday and really need something that can actually keep up with eye tracking without making that grinding noise.

Im looking to spend maybe 900 bucks max on something sharp with killer bokeh so what is the actual best portrait lens for the X-H2S that wont let me down last minute?

Unfortunately I had issues with that lens too... it's just not as good as expected for the price, tbh. If you want results on a budget, try these:

Unfortunately that old lens is just not as good as expected on the X-H2S. I had similar issues with focus hunting during sessions. For that wedding, look at the Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR... its linear motors are silent and fast. If you want to save money, the Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 Pro XF is also fantastic and stays well under your $900 limit while keeping up with eye tracking perfectly.

Ive been shooting Fuji for years and honestly, that old glass can be a total nightmare on a fast body like the X-H2S. Over the years I have learned that the linear motors make a massive difference for weddings where things move fast. Tbh the jump in AF reliability between Fujis own newer lenses and the third-party stuff is pretty significant... some third parties have caught up but others still struggle with consistent eye tracking. Since youre on a deadline for that Seattle gig, I want to narrow this down so you dont waste money. A couple questions:

  • Are you strictly looking for that classic 56mm field of view, or would you be open to something tighter like a 75mm or 90mm?
  • Is weather sealing a dealbreaker for you since youre gonna be outdoors in the PNW? I have tried pretty much every portrait option for X-mount at this point... just let me know your preference on those and I can point you toward the brand that actually delivers for under 900 bucks without that annoying grinding noise.

I was so satisfied when I finally moved away from that jittery motor... it feels like such a gamble every time you press the shutter. Safety and reliability are everything when youre on the clock. Just curious tho, are you looking for a specific focal length range? Also, do you need it to be fully weather sealed for that Seattle weather?

Seconded!

@Reply #2 - good point! Ngl, i was in that exact nightmare last year where my gear just wouldnt lock on during a ceremony and it was so embarrassing! Everyone here is right about needing faster motors. Tbh, just go with Viltrox, you cant go wrong. Their newer glass is incredibly snappy and way cheaper... I switched recently and the eye tracking was fantastic. Seriously life changing!
