What is the absolute best all-around prime for an X-T5 if I only want one lens? I looked at the 23mm f1.4 and the 35mm f2 but people say the 35 is too tight while the 23 is huge for travel. I'm going to Tokyo in two weeks with a $900 limit... what actually handles the 40mp sensor?

Honestly, i tried the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR on my last trip and was pretty disappointed. It just doesnt resolve that 40mp sensor properly, especially wide open. Unfortunately, if you want the best quality for Tokyo, you gotta suck it up and get the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR. Tip: dont sacrifice resolution for a smaller footprint, you will regret it when you see the soft corners.

Like someone mentioned, that 40mp sensor is a beast to feed! Weather sealing is huge for Tokyo tho since the rain is no joke for gear safety. Honestly, the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR is the best choice for reliability and MTF performance.

  • WR rating protects the electronics
  • LM focus is insanely fast
  • Optics handle 40mp perfectly Its worth the size for that output!

It handles the 40mp sensor like a champ, way better than the older f2 lenses. Just be careful with the weight since you mentioned the 23mm was big, but honestly, for Tokyo streets, you need that wider angle anyway... maybe check some sample shots first.
