What is the best all-around lens for a Fujifilm X-T5?

I finally pulled the trigger on an X-T5 but now im stuck on which lens to actually keep on it. Ive been looking at the 18-55mm because everyone says its a classic, but then I read a few threads saying it cant really handle the 40mp sensor and looks soft.

So I was thinking maybe the 16-80mm f4 instead since Im heading to Japan in three weeks and want to travel light. My logic was that the OIS would help but then people say its not as sharp. My priorities are:

  • sharp enough for the new sensor
  • under $1000
  • okay for street stuff

Is the 16-55mm f2.8 the only real answer? It seems so heavy for walking around all day...

Unfortunately my Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR was a massive letdown in Japan. Corners were mushy. Stick with a Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR for street stuff.

just saw this and honestly, i've been super satisfied with my used Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR. i found one on MPB for a steal, so definitely check there to stay under budget. it works well with the x-t5 weather sealing, so zero reliability worries. check out the lens compatibility chart on fujis site... it lists which glass actually resolves that 40mp sensor properly.

In my experience, that 40mp sensor needs the resolving power of the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X over the 18-55mm for travel sharpness.

tbh ive tried many lenses since the x-t1 days and that 16-55mm f2.8 is basically a brick. dont do that to your neck while walking around japan, youll regret it by day two. before i dive into alternatives tho, are you planning on printing these large or are they just for social media? knowing your end goal helps because that 40mp sensor is demanding but the softness thing gets exaggerated for most everyday uses. if you want to save cash and stay under budget, the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a way better value than the fuji red badge. it gives you that constant 2.8 and killer stabilization for handheld street shots at night. another solid budget move is picking up a used Fujifilm XF 23mm f2 R WR. its tiny, weather sealed, and way cheaper than the zooms. ngl sometimes a fast prime is better for travel anyway if you want to keep the weight down.
