Just picked up an X-T5 and I am totally lost with all these lens options. Sorry if this is a super basic question, I really don't know where to start. I'm going on a trip to Japan in about two months and I just want one lens that can do it all so I dont have to carry a bunch of heavy gear around. My budget is around 800 bucks or so, but I honestly cant tell the difference between these prime and zoom things. Is there one that is just the best for someone like me who just wants to take nice travel shots without constantly swapping glass? Maybe something that covers wide stuff and zoom?
Honestly, for Japan, keep it simple. You want a versatile zoom that wont break your back. I used the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS for years and it was solid.
- It is super compact
- Sharp enough for travel shots
- Actually fits your budget If you want a bit more reach, look for a used Fujifilm XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR. Just dont stress, the X-T5 makes any lens look decent.
> You want a versatile zoom that wont break your back. Totally agree. I hauled the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR all over Tokyo last spring. It is super stable for video but kinda slow in low light. When I switched to the Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD, the extra light made a huge difference at night markets. Just make sure you check the size, cuz the Tamron is a bit chunkier.
Honestly, I tried going the single lens route for a big trip once and it was a total headache. The zoom range sounded perfect on paper, but the image quality just felt soft and muddy when I looked at the files later. It was super disappointing. Save yourself the trouble and maybe just grab two compact primes instead. You will thank yourself later when your travel photos actually look sharp and professional.
Coming back to this, I definitely get the struggle. Over the years, I have hauled way too much glass around Japan only to end up missing the actual moment because I was busy fumbling with a lens cap. In my experience, if you want that one-lens setup, you gotta prioritize versatility over absolute perfection. I remember dragging a prime kit through Kyoto and honestly, I missed half the shots because I was too zoomed in or not wide enough. If you really want a zoom, the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS is pretty much the gold standard for a reason. Its light, sharp enough for travel, and fits the X-T5 balance perfectly. Just keep it simple and dont overthink the specs too much while you're actually out there shooting.
