Torn between the 23mm f1.4 WR and the 33mm f1.4 for my X-T5. Leaning toward the 23mm but not sure if its too wide for an all-rounder. Budget is $900 and I have a Japan trip in three weeks.

  • street and travel use
  • weather sealing is key
  • sharp for 40mp

Which one wins...

Honestly, when you are shooting on the Fujifilm X-T5 40MP Mirrorless Camera, the lens choice is critical because that sensor demands high resolving power. Both the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f1.4 R LM WR and the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 33mm f1.4 R LM WR are part of Fujis new generation designed specifically to maximize the 40-megapixel count. They both use linear motors for silent, fast focusing which is handy for street work. They share several technical commonalities:

  • Linear motor (LM) systems for high-speed AF
  • Weather-resistant (WR) construction with multiple seals
  • Redesigned optical groups to minimize chromatic aberration Technically, the 23mm gives you a 35mm full-frame equivalent field of view. Its the gold standard for travel because it allows for environmental portraits and architecture without the heavy distortion of wider glass. If you go with the 33mm, you get a 50mm equivalent. While the 33mm is optically slightly sharper in the corners according to most MTF data, it can feel tight in narrow Japanese streets or busy shrines... For a Japan trip, the versatility of the 23mm usually wins out. You can always crop in on a 40MP file to get a 33mm perspective, but you cant widen the 33mm frame later. Both have the WR designation for the rainy season, so thats a wash. If you want the most flexible tool for a one-lens kit, the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f1.4 R LM WR is the logically sound choice for your specific technical requirements.
