Just stretched my budget to buy a used SL2-S for an upcoming trip to Japan next month, so I'm pretty broke now and need a cheap lens to get me started.
I saw people recommending the Panasonic 50mm f1.8 since it's cheap, but I worry it'll feel too plasticky on the heavy SL2-S body. Also looked at the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 but read some annoying reviews about dust getting inside.
Here is what I need:
- Budget: under 600 USD
- Use case: street photography and low light at night
- Needs to autofocus, no fully manual lenses for now
What is my best bet here?

Honestly, skip the plastic lenses. In my experience, the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary is the sweet spot. It has an all-metal build that balances perfectly on the heavy SL2-S, and the f2 aperture is killer for low light. You can easily grab one used under 500 bucks. It is incredibly sharp wide open and feels premium.
