Seriously which Leica L-mount lens is actually the best for portraits because im honestly about to throw my SL2 out the window. i have been trying to make the Lumix 85mm f1.8 work for my professional headshots and some engagement sessions lately but it just feels so... sterile? like there is zero soul in the images and honestly the autofocus has been hunting like crazy in backlit situations which is basically all i shoot. i have this huge gig coming up in Portland in about three weeks—its a high-end backyard wedding—and i am panicking that i dont have the right glass to deliver that Leica look that the client is specifically paying for.

i looked at the 90mm f2 Summicron-SL but the price tag literally makes me want to cry and i dont know if the focus speed is gonna be fast enough for a moving bride. then i saw the 75mm but is that too wide for tight headshots? i usually like being a bit further back. im so stressed about this because i spent a fortune on the body and now i feel like im stuck with mediocre lenses that make my work look like it was shot on an entry level kit. i have maybe $2800 saved up if i sell some of my old Sony gear but that still doesnt cover a new 90mm lux or whatever. maybe i should look at the Sigma 85mm DG DN? but people say the bokeh is busy and i just want that creamy smooth falloff that doesnt look digital and crunchy.

has anyone actually compared the 75 and the 90 side by side in real world messy lighting? i need something that hits focus every single time because i cant afford to miss the kiss or the walk down the aisle. im just so frustrated that i spent all this money to switch systems and now i feel like im fighting the gear more than actually being creative. should i just bite the bullet and go for the 50mm Summilux instead? i dont know i just need someone to tell me what to do before i have a total breakdown over this wedding...

tbh the Lumix is okay but i get why it feels flat. i would suggest the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75mm f/2 ASPH because the APO correction gives that pop you're missing. be careful with the 90mm lux, its a beast to focus.

  • 75mm works for tight headshots on the SL2.
  • Faster AF than Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art.
  • Used copies hit your $2800 mark. make sure to update your firmware before the big gig!
