I recently purchased the Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and I'm looking for recommendations on the best telephoto zoom lens to pair with it. I primarily shoot wildlife and sports photography, so I need a lens with excellent reach, fast autofocus, and sharp image quality. Any suggestions ?
Same setup here, love it
> I primarily shoot wildlife and sports photography, so I need a lens with excellent reach, fast autofocus, and sharp image quality. I've been using the Z8 for a while now and honestly, the biggest thing i realized is that reliability and weight balance are huge. Last summer i spent days hiking for shots and quickly figured out that if the lens isnt built like a tank, i worry too much about it. Its a heavy body already, so adding a massive zoom changes the whole handling. I remember one trip where i almost missed a shot because the lens was just too clunky to swing around quickly. Before you commit, are you mostly shooting stuff from a tripod or are you planning to go handheld? Also, what kind of distance are we talking about for your sports shots... like are you on the sidelines or way up in the bleachers?

^ This. Also, looking at the range of options mentioned, it really shows how far the system has come. In my experience, choosing between the high-end glass and the more versatile zooms basically comes down to how much weight you're willing to haul around all day. Over the years, Ive bounced between a few different camera brands, and honestly, the transition to my current Nikon setup was the best move I made. I remember shooting sports with my previous brand and the lens just couldnt keep up with the sensor speed... led to a lot of missed moments. Switching over, I noticed immediately that the communication between the glass and the body is way more seamless here. It really changed how I approach wildlife too, like being able to trust that the focus will actually stick is huge. Tbh, it took me a while to get used to the different ergonomics, but the results speak for themselves. Glad to see the discussion covering both the pro stuff and the budget-friendly gear tho.
