I just picked up the new Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera primarily for video work. Any suggestions on the best native Z-mount lens to pair with it for shooting video? I'm looking for a versatile zoom lens that will cover a range of focal lengths. Budget is flexible for the right lens. Thanks!
For an extremely versatile zoom range for video, I highly recommend the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens. It's a pro-grade lens that covers wide angle to short telephoto focal lengths with a constant fast f/2.8 aperture. The optics are spectacular - tack sharp from edge to edge with beautiful bokeh. It also has great video features like de-clickable aperture control, minimal focus breathing, and fast silent autofocus. An ideal high-end zoom for the Z8.
I have been using the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S since it launched and it really is a standout for video. The technical specs are quite impressive for a zoom. You get a constant f/4 aperture which means your exposure stays locked even when youre punching in or out. Im very satisfied with the lack of focus breathing on this glass. Its barely noticeable. The 24-120mm range is versatile enough that I rarely find myself swapping lenses during a shoot. The S-line build quality is extremely reliable for field work. No complaints there. If you need a faster wide option for low light or gimbal setups, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 also works well. It handles the Z8 high resolution sensor beautifully and maintains a constant aperture. Both options provide the reliability you need for professional production schedules.
The new announced tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di iii VXD G2 lens is another great video lens with a much lower price tag.
^ This. Also, late to the party but I've been reading through the suggestions and they're all pretty spot on. In my experience, the group has basically covered the main bases—you've got your versatile pro zooms for the heavy lifting, the wide stuff for gimbal work, and those fast primes for when you need that specific look. Over the years, I've tried many different setups, and honestly, you can't go wrong if you just stick with the native Nikon S-line glass. It's basically built for the Z8 sensor. If you're looking for something a bit more budget-friendly, just look at what the major third-party manufacturers are putting out for the Z mount lately. Their quality has jumped significantly and they're very reliable for video now. Just pick a focal range that feels comfortable for your style and youll be set... the Nikon Z8 is such a powerhouse that it's gonna make almost any decent glass look professional.
Sure! You can choose Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S as prime lens and Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S as zoom lens that are excellent choices for video work with your Nikon Z8.
Jumping in here because this reminds me of my buddy Dave. He went all in on a Z8 when it first dropped but then realized he had zero dollars left for glass.
- He spent weeks trying to rig up these ancient lenses he found at a thrift shop for cheap.
- One of them didnt even have a focus ring that worked smoothly at all.
- We spent a whole afternoon trying to shim the mount with pieces of a soda can just to get the thing to sit flush.
- In the end, the footage was so soft it looked like he filmed it through a tub of margarine. Basically, he learned the hard way that the body is only half the battle when you are trying to be cost conscious...
If you need more reach, check out the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S. An excellent telephoto zoom with in-lens stabilization to complement the Z8's IBIS. Razor sharp optics and creamy bokeh. Focuses rapidly and silently. Built like a tank. A must-have lens for tight shots, interviews, nature videography and anytime you need to zoom in tight on the action.

1. Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S: This lens offers versatility and a constant f/2.8 aperture, making it suitable for various shooting conditions. The zoom range is ideal for both wide-angle shots and portraits, and its robust build quality and excellent optical performance ensure sharp, professional-quality video.
2. Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S: Perfect for capturing expansive landscapes, architecture, or dynamic vlogs, the 14-30mm focal range provides a wide field of view, allowing for creative compositions.
3. Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S: This prime lens is fantastic for achieving a shallow depth of field, which is great for interviews and cinematic shots. The f/1.8 aperture provides excellent low-light performance and allows for beautiful bokeh.Â
Each of the lenses can enhance your videography with Nikon Z8, allowing for a range of creative options.
One of my favorite video lenses for the Nikon Z8 is the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S. For establishing shots, interiors, and wide angles, this lens performs wonderfully. It's incredibly sharp from wide open, and the f/4 aperture is a good balance between size/weight and low light ability. Focus is quick, quiet and decisive for video. I love using this for gimbal work and wide handheld shots. The short 14mm end really opens up creative possibilities. Highly recommended ultrawide zoom for Z mount video.
When selecting a video lens for your Nikon Z8, you'll want to consider factors such as focal length, aperture, and the type of shooting you'll be doing. Here are some great options:
-
Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S: This versatile zoom lens provides great image quality across a popular focal range, making it suitable for a variety of video shooting scenarios, from interviews to landscapes. The constant f/2.8 aperture allows for good low-light performance and depth of field control.
-
Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S: If you're looking for a wider angle for vlogging or landscapes, this lens is an excellent choice. It’s lightweight, compact, and provides sharp images with good control over distortion.
Any updates on this?
Don't forget about prime lenses! I love using the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S as an all-around prime on my Z8. It's super sharp, focuses lightning fast and silently, and gives me that shallow depth of field when I need it at f/1.8. The focal length is perfect as a normal view on the Z8. Highly recommend this as a complement to a zoom lens.
