Honestly so fed up with my heavy 24-70 f2.8 its just way too much weight for my D850 and my back is gonna give out in Japan next week. My logic was more glass is better but now im desperate for a lighter travel lens under 600 bucks. What actually works without being a brick?

Honestly, just grab a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR. It weighs 710g, which is a massive drop from your current brick. It covers a better focal range for travel too. If you need even lighter, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR is only 465g and usually goes for under $300 used. Both are sharp enough for the D850 sensor if you stop down a bit.
