im so done with this 16-50mm kit lens it is driving me insane. I spent all morning trying to film a simple review for my youtube channel and the autofocus kept hunting back and forth the whole time. Half my footage is basically unusable and I am just ready to find something that actually works.
I need a solid prime for my a6400 that wont break the bank because I only have like $350 max to spend right now and need it by next weekend for a shoot.
- super fast autofocus
- quiet motor for internal mic
- wide enough for a small desk setup
- sharp enough for 4k
What are you guys actually using that isnt a thousand bucks...
Honestly the kit lens is notorious for hunting in low light or complex backgrounds because the variable aperture forces the ISO up and ruins contrast for the AF system. For a desk setup on an a6400, you really need something with a wide focal length to account for the 1.5x crop factor. The best technical choice for under 350 is the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E. It provides a 24mm equivalent field of view which is ideal for talking head shots and review videos.
- High-speed stepping motor (STM) provides smooth, silent focus transitions for video.
- Nine-blade rounded diaphragm creates decent bokeh for background separation.
- Three FLD and two SLD elements minimize chromatic aberration effectively.
- f/1.4 aperture allows for much faster shutter speeds in indoor lighting compared to f/3.5. If you need something narrower, the Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 E Sony E is a solid alternative. It is lighter and comes in around 280-300 depending on the seller. However, the Sigma has better weather sealing and noticeably less focus breathing when racking focus between your face and a product. Tbh the Sigma is the only one that really hits all your specs while staying in budget. It is worth every penny of that 340 dollar price tag.
