Hitting up Tokyo in three weeks with my A7IV and need a single lens for the trip. Budget is $1k.

Ive looked at the Sony 24-105mm G but then saw the Tamron 28-200 is way cheaper and lighter for walking all day. Is that extra 4mm on the wide end actually worth the price jump?

Unfortunately, that 4mm on the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS wasnt as good as expected for the price. Id just get the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD instead!

Just saw this! Tokyo is gonna be amazing. Quick question tho, are you doing a ton of night shooting or just daytime? Ngl that extra 4mm is kinda huge for tight city streets...

Jumping in here. I've spent way too much time over the years analyzing MTF charts and focal length data for these specific zooms. In my experience, that 4mm gap on the wide end is definitely noticeable in tight city spots, but the weight of the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS really starts to feel like a lead weight after walking 15 miles a day through Shinjuku. I used to obsess over corner sharpness and constant apertures, but eventually realized that portability often trumps pure lab specs when you're actually on the move. Tbh, most people dont actually need the extra resolution in the corners that the G glass provides unless they're doing pro work. Are you planning on making any large physical prints from this trip, or is this mainly for digital use? Also, if you look back at your old photos, what focal length do you actually use the most? Knowing if you're a wide-angle person or a telephoto person would help a ton before you drop the cash.

Honestly if youre heading to Tokyo you need gear that is 100% reliable! Just stick with Sony for the peace of mind. I always go with native glass because the build quality is fantastic and it never lets me down in the field. Its so much safer than risking it with other brands on a big trip like this! Their stuff is amazing and I love the way the autofocus works perfectly every single time. Just get any Sony zoom that fits your budget and youll be totally set. Have the best time, Japan is incredible!
