I just got a Sony a7iii for my trip to Tokyo next month and I am so excited but also totally lost lol. I want one lens that can do everything because I dont want to carry a bunch of heavy stuff while walking around. My logic was that a zoom lens is better? But then I saw some people say the fixed ones are sharper but what does that even mean for a beginner like me? I have like $900 left to spend and I just want something that works for street photos and maybe some food shots too. Sorry if this is such a basic question I just have no idea where to start with all these numbers like f2.8 and 24-105... which one is the do it all one?
I saw this today and honestly, be careful with going too heavy. When I hit Tokyo last year, I lugged a massive setup and my neck was trashed after 20k steps. I would suggest the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary because it is tiny for the specs. You might want to consider:
- Keeping total weight under 500g
- f/2.8 is a lifesaver in dark izakayas
- Getting a Peak Design Slide Lite strap It is better to have a slightly shorter zoom range if it means you actually want to carry the camera all day.
Ive tried many, but Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is the travel king.
- 24mm fits alleys
- OSS stops blur f/4 sounds slow but your a7iii handles high ISO like a beast tho.
For $900, you really cant beat the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. It hits the sweet spot for weight and optics while staying within your budget.
- Constant f/2.8 aperture is crucial for low light shots in Shinjuku at night.
- Short minimal focus distance makes it perfect for those close-up food shots. Sharpness is high enough across the zoom range that you wont even miss using a prime lens.
