Ive been shooting with my a6400 for like 4 years now and mostly stuck to the kit lens and an old vintage 50mm I adapted but man I just dropped my main setup and the kit lens is toast. The zoom ring is totally jammed and wont budge at all. I have a buddys outdoor wedding ceremony to shoot next Saturday here in Seattle and Im totally freaking out because Im basically broke after paying rent this month. I know my way around a camera but Ive never really looked into the third party stuff much beyond the big expensive brands like Sigma Art glass. I need something that can handle lower light since the reception is in a dim tent and it needs to be sharp wide open if possible because I wont have a tripod. Im looking for something under 300 bucks maybe 400 if I really stretch it but cheaper is better. I was looking at those Samyang or maybe the Tamron primes but the reviews are all over the place and I dont have time to return something if it sucks. What is the absolute best budget lens for a Sony E-mount system that wont fail me on a tight deadline?
I saw your post and man, it took me back to a rainy gig I had in Portland where my gear took a tumble right before a low-light event. I was super stressed about the money side too. I ended up picking up the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E and honestly, I've been incredibly satisfied with how it performs. It really is the sweet spot for the a6400 sensor. When I first started using it, I was looking closely at the technical side, like chromatic aberration or softness when shooting wide open. The glass actually surprised me tho. It has two aspherical elements which help a ton with distortion. On that specific shoot, I had to keep it at f/1.4 the whole time because the lighting was terrible, and the results were still crisp. The stepping motor is basically silent too, which is a nice bonus if you do any video. Another one that works well if you want something wider is the Samyang AF 24mm f1.8 FE. I know its technically a full frame lens but it sits perfectly on the crop bodies and gives you a classic 36mm field of view. I used it for some landscape stuff recently and the sharpness is legit for the price. Both should be under your 400 limit if you find a decent deal... good luck with the wedding, Seattle weather can be tricky so that fast aperture is gonna be a lifesaver.
Found this late but honestly, dont gamble on cheap third-party stuff for a wedding. I had issues with Samyang before and unfortunately the focus was not as good as expected. It hunted way too much in dim light. If you need reliability:
- Sony E 35mm f1.8 OSS: Fast and has stabilization. Pro: very sharp. Con: might blow the 300 dollar budget.
- Sony E 50mm f1.8 OSS: Very affordable. Pro: cheap and stable. Con: tight for wide shots. Native glass is just safer.
🙌
Noted!
Huh interesting. I had no idea. The more you know I guess 🤷
I feel your pain man, I dropped my first setup years ago right before a gig and its basically the worst feeling ever. Since youre on a tight deadline and budget, you gotta be careful with some of those cheaper third party brands. I would suggest looking at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary. I used it for a shoot in a really dark venue once and it was a total lifesaver. Its super sharp wide open which youll definitely need for that dim tent reception. You might want to consider the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 AF too, but just make sure to check the autofocus speed before the wedding. I had some weird hunting issues with an older Viltrox that almost ruined a session once. Honestly, for under 300 bucks, the Sigma is the safest bet. Just watch your shutter speed since the a6400 doesnt have in-body stabilization and maybe grab a cheap hood for that Seattle drizzle...
